Bird Rock
The Pebble Beach coast is an unrivaled mesmerizing corner of blue ocean nestled along a rocky California beach shore. Mountainous stones tower from the ocean floor just out of reach from the waters edge where birds gather and ignore the regular ambush of waves as they crash around the perimeters of their chosen perches. The salty air blows swiftly from the ocean’s surface gripping to every surface it touches, the crash of the waves echos from every corner, and yet it feels as though time has stopped. The warm embrace of the sun amongst the cool breeze envelopes you with an unmatched peace. And the birds sing a familiar tune that seems to say “welcome to the Pacific Coast”.
Bird Rock is named because of the many flocks that gather along this massive ocean stone. I am very fortunate to live near this landmark and was able to travel to this particular view point to capture the majesty of the California central coast on a traditionally foggy morning in February 2025. The primary bird species that prefers this rock are called Cormorants. They are a striking black bird that speckle the skies like ground pepper and are occasionally joined by local pelicans, gulls, and shorebirds to create a beautiful harmony of swirling colors along the skyline.
