Brief Convergence
A foggy morning in Asilomar California; the waves crashed violently against the mountainous stones firmly anchored to the ground as birds sing, dance, and swirl in the sky overhead. The air was sharp with cold but also thick with the scent of the salty Pacific Ocean. It was the perfect day for painting.
Over the course of two days I was able to complete this Plein Air painting. It captures the Pacific Coast in the early winter morning bringing it to a halt as I saw it. The birds seemingly had no plan with their flight and it was captivating to watch them travel from one rock to the next, avoiding the waves reaching the stone peaks and the firm gusts of air knocking them from their perches. For me, this is home and it was a true honor to be able to venture out and capture this moment in time.
This piece is titled “Brief Convergence” for a couple reasons. At this particular corner of the Monterey coast the sea seems to collide from two different angles, locally known as The Restless Sea. The moments are fleeting but constant; watching the waves meet then calm over and over again. Alternatively, a group of Pelicans is known as a “Brief”. There were many groups of Pelicans that joined the gathering of birds upon the rocks converging into a harmonious party. Hence, the name.
